The Power of Music in Writing

Music has always been a powerful force in our lives. Whether you're navigating the heartache of a breakup, trying to lift your spirits, or setting the mood for a special moment, music has a way of speaking to us when words fail. It has the ability to heal, to uplift, and to slow the pace of our racing minds. It can serve as a constant companion, guiding us through life's ups and downs, and helping us find clarity. In short, music is undeniably powerful.

For me, music became an indispensable part of the writing process when I set out to create my novel. Writing a book requires not just technical skill, but also an emotional connection to the characters, the world, and the story you’re weaving. I needed to be in the right headspace to make the narrative come to life. And for that, I relied heavily on music to help guide me through the emotional landscapes I was trying to create.

When I first began to shape my novel from the dream that had sparked the story, Natasha Blume’s song “Journey” became my anthem. I listened to it on repeat, and it played a crucial role in shaping not just the plot, but especially the main character, Jane. The song exudes strength, determination, resilience, and transformation – qualities that are at the heart of Jane’s character. Listening to the song while visualizing her journey allowed me to feel the raw emotions that she would experience, and it helped me craft a character who would embody these traits in her pursuit of the truth.

In addition to Natasha Blume, I also turned to the music of UNSECRET, particularly the tracks “Heroes Never Die” and “For This You Were Born.” These songs became my go-to soundtracks as I delved deeper into the intricate details of the story. The tone of the music resonated deeply with me and helped me shape the overall atmosphere of the novel. UNSECRET’s music, with its epic and cinematic qualities, added a sense of grandeur and depth to the world I was building, allowing me to explore the highs and lows of the characters' emotional arcs.

In writing, sometimes the words come easily, and sometimes they need a little extra push. For me, music provided that push. It was like a bridge between my mind and my emotions, helping me channel the essence of the story and the characters in ways that words alone couldn’t quite capture. Music doesn’t just accompany the writing; it becomes a part of the writing, a tool that helps shape and define the narrative in ways you might not even realize until you look back and see how deeply it influenced the process.

So, whether you're a writer, an artist, or simply someone looking to tap into your creativity, never underestimate the power of music. It has the ability to inspire, to heal, and to guide you on your journey, wherever it may take you.
